9 Years: Soil Mechanics Engineering,

. Engineering Geology, and Field Construction Inspection.

EXPERIENCE: 1971-Present. Mr. Buchanan joined the Uashington Office of Bechtel in 1971. For three nonths, he was a resident engineer for the subsurface investigation at the Greenwood fossil Unit 1 for the Detroit Edison Company.

Next, he was the field engineer for four months on the soil '

engineering phase of the subsurface investigation at the Perryman Nuclear Plant for Daltimore Gas and Electric

/ ' Company. He directed the technical operations of the four

( k ,) ~

drill crews and their three supervisors. The work included (s classifying soil types, taking undisturbed and bulk samples,

~

assigning many type of laboratory testing, installing t piezometers, performing field permeability tests, making well pumpout tests, and collecting water level data. For about five months his office work included evaluating

' laboratory test results, depicting subsurface p r o f il'e s , and sc1ceting the parametc.r.s for design _for n.atpral soi1 and for soil with varying degrees o f - compaction . He made compu-tations for the settlements and bearing capacitics of foundations grading quantitics for the various soils, scopage quantities,.

well pumpout test data, stability of slopes under various conditions including scismic, and foundations for transmission line towers. He helped write and edit major portions of the soils and' foundation engineering section of the PSAR. Later, he did work in the Farley F SAR cf f ort , including field sanpling of representctive rock from the foundat' ion strata, analyzing test results, and writing and editing the PSAR. Current work includes Midland Plant Units 1 and 2.

1967-1971. Mr. Buchanan was employed by Law Engineering Testing Company, gcotechnical and materials engineers, in Raleigh. .He was technical director of the six

~ month long subsurface investigations for the coal-fired electric generating plant at Belcw Crcok for Duke Power Company. There he coordinated activitics of soil test borings, rock corings, borrow pit investigations, and laboratory testing.

On several other field jobs, he inspected and evaluated drilled piers and other foundations on soil and rock. His office work included planning soil boring and laboratory testing prograes, computing scepage locscs through dikes, and writing final engineering reports with recommendations.

1966-1967. Mr..Euchanan worked for the North Carolina State Highway Commission in Raicigh.

As Party Chief of a geological f1cid party, his work included field testing, sampling, and analyzing soil and rock for support of bridges and retaining walls. Work also included sappling and evaluating soil for in place roadway subgrade and for coupacted roadday e c b a n k r. c n t s , and making graphical presentations of subsurface conditions in roaduay profiles.

. 1964-1966. Upon conpletion o f-(~, his acadcuic work he vorhed with Danes 6 Moore, consultants in applied carth sciences in Atlanta. He supervised drilling A j

./

and dampling apcrations in rany types of soil and rock all over

.. - the United States, planned and perforned various laboratory tests, and made engineering computations for cany types of soil loading walls. At an Ethyl-Visqucen plant, he and a subordinate technician inspected all foundations and carthwork during construction. .

1962-1964 . While in graduate school, he was a Roccarch' Assistant on a highway cugineering research project. His dutics included laboratory testing and '

correlating the engincering properties of various Piedmont residual soils that could be differentiated by geological maps, pedological maps, and air photos. (half-time.)

1960,1961 Summers. He was an Enginecr's Aide on highway survey parties. His dutics included being rodman, chainman, and doing office calculations.

Civil Engineer Mr. Knoll started materials testing work in 1957 as a laboratory technician for the U.S. Corp of Engineers in the Detroit District, performing standard soils and materials tests. He later assisted in preparing concrete and asphalt mixed designs for various projects, participated in numerous inspec-tion trips within the District and prepared reports on site inspection of asphalt and concrete paving opdrations until 1961 when he joined the U.S. Army.

October 1964, Gary vent to work for Pittsburgh Testing Laboratory, Detroit, as a lab technician engaged in the inspection and testing of concrete, soils and asphalts in the laboratory and field. He worked with Pittsburgh Testing in Detroit until 1970 when he transferred to the Ludington Pumped Storage Project as Chief Laboratory Technician. He directed and assisted technicians in the testing of concrete and soils until Dece=ber 1970, when he was promoted to Supervisor with Pittsburgh Testing at the Ludincton Pumped Storace Project.

(N As Supervisor, he instructed and coordinated the activities of technicians

(

q_j engaged in the performance of routine and special tests to control concrete, reviewed testing procedures and insured all vork was done in accordance with the ASTM and concrete specifications. Additionally, he reviewed concrete m specifications, participated in test resolutions, recorded infor=ation and prepared final reports on all testing. He was also in charge of repair, maintenance, and calibration of testing equipment.

Dececher 1972, Gary returned to the Detroit Office of Pittsburgh Testing awaiting further assignments and did some on-site inspection on trips to the Southeastern United States for nuclear power plant siting. In June 1973, -

Gary joined Bechtel Power Corporation at th'e Midland, Michigan project to '

work in the Civil Engineering group.

.His education includes Laboratory Technician and Inspector training courses from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and evening courses at Wayne State University.
