Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary December 2010

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for December 2010. In December, we captured fifteen (15) Caretta caretta, and thirty one (31)

Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. Due to low water temperatures during four days of month, seven (7) juvenile green turtles were found lethargic at the surface of the barrier net. These turtles were held until they became active. The turtles were found to be in good condition and released later in the day of capture, except for two turtles with large papillomas. During the month there were four turtles transported to rehabilitation facilities and one green turtle mortality.

On December 20th, a juvenile green turtle was found dead, moderately decomposed on the primary 5 inch barrier net. The turtle appeared to have been entrained into the canal post mortem. After consultation with FWC personnel, the event was considered to be non-causal to plant operations.

On December 12th, two juvenile green turtles were captured with multiple large papillomas.

Both turtles were captured lethargic at the surface by method of dip net. The animals were in fair condition and transported to Mote Marine Laboratory by FWC for rehabilitation. The events were determined to be non-causal, unrelated to plant operations.

On December 24th, two juvenile green turtles were captured with multiple large papillomas. Both turtles were found lethargic at the surface of the primary barrier net.

One of the turtles was in fair condition and the other was found in poor condition. Inwater Research biologists met with FWC

staff in Stuart to facilitate the transfer of the animals to Gumbo Limbo Nature Center for rehabilitation. The events were determined to be non-causal, unrelated to plant operations.

Throughout the month of December, the 5 barrier net experienced light loads of algae that entered into the intake canal. On December 21st, the 5-inch and 7-ich barrier nets were inspected by Underwater Engineering Service Inc. Both nets were found to be in good condition with no holes. This temporary barrier has effectively kept turtles from moving further down the canal. A permanent fix to the primary net continues to remain in the design phase.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all the turtles are attached.

Also attached is the spreadsheet of all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and month/year to date for 2010. This spreadsheet also tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year.
