DUKE POWER COMPANY CHER0KEE NUCLEAR STATION Response to IE Bulletin No. 79-03 i

Duke has determined that the Cherokee Project site has received 200 feet of ASME SA-312 welded pipe manufactured by Youngstown Welding and Engineering Company. This pipe may be used in safety-related systems. Per the ASME Code,Section III, Paragraph NC 2551, the required NDE includes either surface or volumetric examination. Liquid penetrant testing was performed, satisfying these requirements.

Duke representatives have inspected the Youngstown shops, reviewed Youngstown's method of liquid penetrant examination, and determined that their method meets the requirements of the ASME Code. The subject pipe has also passed a shop hydrostatic test and will receive a field hydrostatic test. No additional inspections are planned at this time.

When details of the imperfections already discovered, or which may be dis-covered by this program, are available, Duke Power Company would like to review that information as a possible basis for further action.
