C By letter dated December 15,1998, Union Electric Company (UE) submitted a request for approval of alternatives to certain requirements of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressuro Vessel Code,Section XI, Subsection IWL,1992 Edition and 1992 Addenda for Callaway Plant, Unit 1. Subsection lWL provides the requirements for inservice inspection of concrete containment components. UE requested relief f.om specific minimum illumination and maximum direct examination distance requirements and proposed an alternative to the staff. The staff has reviewed the information provided and determined that the proposed alternative will provide an acceptable level of quality and safety. Therefore, the alternative is authorized pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3)(i).
