H. Grier,' Director of Regulation United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission ,

Region 1 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, Pennsylvania 19406

Dear Mr. Crier:

In accordance with Appendix A, Beaver Valley Technical Specifications 3.7.14.1 and 6.9.2, the following special report is submitted. This report was discussed with our Resident Inspector, Mr. D. A. Beckman, February 26, ic80.

On February 26, 1980, an operator was dispatched to shut down Motor-driven Fire -Pump [FP-P-1] which was running to provide water to maintenance for lancing condenser tubes. The operator noticed a strange smell which proved to be coming from [FP-P-1}. The upper bearing was extremely hot to the touch. Fire Pump

[FP-P-1} was immediately removed from service. The operator felt that the oil might have water in it.

Subsequent checks after removing the fire pump motor from the system showed no traces of water but the oil did have a burnt appearance and snell.

The oil cooler was checked and hydeced satisfactorily. Mechanical maintenance

. personnel will check cooling water supply piping to the cooler for blockage.

At prestnt, the motor bearing is being replaced and the motor will be returned to service. Accomodations are also being made to use a portable diesel-driven fire pump for water supply to construction and maintenance personnel during extended outages.

This letter is intended to serve as our 14-day followup report. However, if additional information becomes available, we will issue a subsequent report.

Very truly yours, Y '
