Dear Hr. Patrick:

NOTIFICATION OF NONCOHPLIANCE WITII EFFLUENT LIHITATIONS - NPDES PERHIT NO. AL0022080 - BROWNS FERRY NUCLEAR PLANT Descri tion of the dischar, e--Discharge No. 007 - Radwaste systems discharge.

A sample co ected on Hay 2, 1982 contained 124 mg/L of su'spended solids, exceeding the daily maximum permit limit of 100 mg/L.

Cause and eriod of the noncom liance--The prerelease analysis indicated that t t te xsc targe rom te aun ry rain tank would be less than the permitted daily maximum limit. However, the filtration system failed to perform to the degree estimated in the prerelease analysis. The laundry drain tank was discharged

~ from 1:25 p.m. to 2:25 p.m. and from 2:40 p.m. to 5:05 p.m. on Hay 2, 1982.

The period of noncompliance was 3 hours3.472222e-5 days
8.333333e-4 hours
4.960317e-6 weeks
1.1415e-6 months
and 25 minutes. The laundry drain tank was discharged at a rate of 41 gpm into the condenser cooling water dis-charge, which had a flow rate of 600,000 gpm during the release. Therefore, the possibility for adverse environmental impact on the Wheeler Reservoir during the release was significantly reduced.

Ste s taken to reduce eliminate and revent recurrence of the noncom l in disctar e-- te isctarge was terminate at: p.m. w en t>e ana ysis o t e samp e collected at 2:25 p.m. was completed and indicated the noncompliance.

The contents of the tank were reprocessed to lower the suspended solids con-centration before initiating further releases. The filter-cartridges in use at the time of the noncompliance were replaced with new cartridges as a pre-caution. An investigation is being conducted to determine if there is a pos-sible inconsistency in the quality of filters used in this treatment system, 4
