Dear Mr. Marlar:

NOTIFICATION OF NONCOMPLIANCE WITH EFFLUENT LIMITATIONS - NPDES PERMIT NO. AI0022080 -, BROWNS FERRY NUCLEAR PLANT Descri tion of the dischar e--Discharge No. 006 - Sewage treatment plant effluent. Results of analyses of grab samples collected in May exceeded the maximum permit limitations as follows.

Date Parameter Concentration Maximum Limitation 5/09 BOD5 72 mg/L 45 mg/L TSS 120 mg/L 45 mg/L 5/30 TSS 46 mg/L 45 mg/L Cause and eriod of the noncom liance--The sewage treatment plant is overloaded. The daily total flow averaged approximately 45,000 gpd for the monthly sampling period. This high flow contributes directly to the noncompliances by washing solids over the clarifier weir.

Ste s taken to reduce eliminate or revent recurrence of the noncom 1 in

~dischar e The chlorine contact tank is periodically pumped out to help reduce permit noncompliances resulting from overloaded conditions. A sewage treatment lagoon has been designed to replace the facility in 1984. The sewage treatment plant will be operated as close as possible to the permit limits until the lagoon is operational.
