Dear Mr. !!orn:

BROWNS FERRY NUCLEAR PLANT - NPDES PERMIT NO. AL0022080 - NOTIFICATION OF BYPASS Description of Discharge--Discharge Serial Number 111 (sewage treatment plant effluent).

On January 7 at 3:30 p.m., sewage was observed discharging to the intake forebay via the yard drainage system. The sewage was flowing from a manhole in front of the hypochlorite building.

Cause and Period of Bypass--The bypass was caused by an obstruction in the sewerline serving the old training center. No discharge of sewage was observed during an inspection of the area at 3:30 p.m. on January 6.

The sewerline was observed to be flowing correctly at 7:55 a.m. on January 8. The maximu:s period of the bypass was 40 hours4.62963e-4 days
0.0111 hours
6.613757e-5 weeks
1.522e-5 months
. Based on an estimated population of 150 people at the old training center during the day shift and an estimated per capita flow of 29 gallons per day for one day, about 4,350 gallons of sewage were discharged.

Ster;s Taken to Reduce. Eliminate, and Prevent Recurrence of the Bypass--

Plant maintenance personnel were notified of the incident at 3:45 p.m. on January 7, and the old training center was isolated to stop continued inflow to the system. The blockage was mechanically dislodged prior to the arrival of the day shif t on January 8. The material blocking the 4 sewerline was not determined. No adverse impact' to the intake forebay were observed.
