Dear Mr. Marlar:

NOTIFICATION OF NONCOMPLIANCE WITH EFFLUENT LIMITATIONS - NPDES PERMIT NO. AL0022080 - BROWNS FERRY NUCLEAR PLANT Descri tion of the dischar e--Discharge No. 006 Sewage'reatment plant effluent. A grab sample collected on July 12 and reported from the laboratory on July 18 contained 76 mg/L of total suspended solids (TSS},

exceeding the permit limitations of 45 mg/L.

Cause and eriod of the noncom liance--Analysis of the sample for the required parameters yie ded the following results.

Parameter Concentration - 'axilltullt Permi t Limi tati on BOD 36 mg/L 45 mg/L TSS 76 mg/L 45 mg/L Fecal Col i form 10 N/100 ml 400 N/10(j ml Chlorine Residual 1.5 mg/L N/A The instantaneous flow at the time of sample collection was 88,848 gpd and the daily totalizer flow averaged 53,600 gpd for two days before and including the date of sample collection. This high flow caused light, relatively inert solids to be washed over the clarifier weir causing the temporary noncompliance.

Ste s taken to reduce, eliminate, and revent recurrence of the noncom 1 in

~dsschar e T e system overloa as een stud>ed and design changes are currently being reviewed. We plan to finalize the modification proposals in the near future.
