April 9, 1986 Enclosed is a copy of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on Long-Term Management of the Existing Radioactive Wastes and Residues at the Niagara Falls Storage Site, April 1986 (D0E/EIS-0109F). The EIS is prepared in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 to assess and compare alternatives for long-tenn management of the existing radioactive wastes and residues at the Niagara Falls Storage Site, Lewiston, New York. Alternative sites assessed include the Niagara Falls Storage Site and DOE sites at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and Hanford, Washington.
 
The DOE's preferred alternative is in-place management at the Niagara Falls Storage Site with modified containment.
