Dapas, a 24-year veteran of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, has been named the new Administrator of the NRCs Region IV office in Arlington, Texas. He succeeds Arthur T. Howell, who announced his retirement after a long and distinguished career.

Marc Dapas has repeatedly demonstrated an exemplary commitment to technical and managerial excellence in a wide variety of assignments in our regional offices as well as at our Headquarters, said Bill Borchardt, the NRCs Executive Director for Operations. The experience he has gained will serve the agency well.

Dapas will assume his new position within the next few months. In the interim, Steven A. Reynolds, who has been selected as Deputy Regional Administrator for Region IV, will serve as Acting Regional Administrator. Reynolds currently serves as Director, Division of Reactor Projects, in the NRCs Region III office in Lisle, Ill.

Dapas began his NRC career in 1989 as an Operations Specialist in the agencys headquarters office, and three years later he was selected to be the Senior Resident Inspector at the Prairie Island reactor facility in Red Wing, Minn., where he was responsible for the site-specific inspection program to assure safe plant operation. In 1995, he was promoted to the position of Senior Reactor Analyst in the NRCs Region III office, one of 10 agency-wide positions established as part of the NRCs overall strategy to more fully risk-inform its regulatory process.

In 1996, Dapas was promoted to branch chief in the NRCs Region III office, where he supervised the regulatory oversight of two reactor facilities on the NRCs problem plant list against a backdrop of intense public scrutiny and congressional interest. Two years later, Dapas was promoted to a Senior Executive Service position in the NRCs Region III office, where he led a program to assure safe operation of 18 reactor facilities in the Midwestern United States. In 2002, Dapas was assigned to lead the materials program in Region III, involving the licensing, inspection, and event response activities for 1,200 nuclear materials users, and the coordination of policy and program activities with local, state, and federal government organizations.

In 2005, Dapas was named the Deputy Regional Administrator in the NRCs Region I office in King of Prussia, Pa., where he provided critical leadership in support of that offices oversight of the inspection, enforcement, investigation, licensing, and emergency response programs for nuclear

reactors and materials licensees in the Northeast. He returned to NRC headquarters in 2011 as the deputy director for the Office of Nuclear Security and Incident Response, a major program office that provides oversight of agency security policy for nuclear facilities and for users of radioactive material, provides security interface with other federal agencies, and maintains the agency emergency preparedness and incident response programs.

Dapas received a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and served on active duty in the U.S. Navys nuclear power submarine program. After leaving active duty to join the NRC, Dapas continued his military service as a member of the Navy Reserve, retiring last June after 30 years of service.
