SUBJECT:

APPARENT HYDR 0 GEN BURN IN PRESSURIZER At approximately 0915 CDT on October 14, 1987, there was an apparent hydrogen burn in the pressurizer. At the time of the event, the reactor was in a refueling mode. One pressurizer code safety valve had been removed, and the s opening closed with sheet metal and plastic covers. A workman struck an arc to lay a weld bead on a valve associated with a pressurizer level transmitter.

There was a loud noise for several seconds, and the covers on the flange for the removed code safety valve were blown off.

There were no injuries, and no apparent damage to plant equipment or structures external to the pressurizer. Airborne activity levels did not increase, and a sample of the vapor . space in the pressurizer failed to indicate the presence of hydrogen. This event appears to be similar to the one reported in IEIN 82-28 The resident inspectors are following the licensee's investigation of this event.
