UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN LONGER THAN 48 HOURS i South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G) has taken the Summer plant out of service to repair damane to some non-nuclear components caused by water hammer in the low-pressure condensate system on Saturday, May 31.

The water hammer has been attributed to personnel error during restart of the unit, which tripped off line at 10:26 a.m. that day as the result of an over-temperature, delta-T signal in the reactor protection system. One temperature signal channel was being tested, and another was being worked on at the time. All systems functioned normally during the scram.

The unit, now in hot standby, is expected to remain out of service for several days while evaluation and repairs.
