Washington, DC 20555 License DPR-35 Docket 50-293 10CFR20.302(a) Approval Request for Relocation and Placement of Construction Soil with Traces of Residual Radioactivity Boston Edison Company (BEco) requests IE approval pursuant to 10CFR20.302(a) for on site relocation of approximately 79,000 ft3 of sand, -silt and rough  !

stone containing very low levels of radioactivity'(contaminated material) as '

detailed in the attached report. The application specifically requests

( approval to move this material from its present location inside a fenced area- r

! within the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station (PNPS) contractor parking lot to a '

location within the PNPS site-BEco controlled area. i The material for relocation consists.of controlled backfill construction soil l

placed during original plant construction. This construction fill has traces of residual radioactivity due to the natural fall out, and plant modification and operational activities. After relocation, the material will be covered with topsoil and seeded to prevent erosion. The location where the material had been stored is planned for a parking lot.-

The attached report demonstrates that the potential radiological and i environmental - consequences from the proposed action are negligible, and the proposed placement of this material does not present any-environmental impact on public health and safety. ,
