Subject:
Interim Report of Potential 10CFR50.55(e) Its on Arc Strike on Primary Containment Pipe Penetration Bellows (#81)
Dear Mr. Keppler:
On Nov mber 23, 1982, Detroit Edison's Mr. D. Ferencz, Acting Supervisor -
Construction Quality Assurance, telephoned Mr. H. Wescott of NRC Region III, to report on a potential problem with arc strikes on the prizrary containment pipe penetration bellows at the Fermi 2 site.
The arc strikes are between 1/8" and 3/16" in diameter on the outer ply.
The bellows consists of two (2) plys, each with a wall thickness of.031",
and are separated with a stainless steel mesh approxirrately 1/16" thick. A visr:1 examination established that the outer ply is perforated in one instance without damage to the steel mesh. The inner ply is not damaged, but will be checked by means of a boroscope to verify that there is no dis-coloration of the internal surface.
A full-scale facsimile bellows is scheduled to be on site soon so that the repair, in accordance with code case N-315, can begin.
Another report on this itm, either interim or final, is scheduled to be sent on or before April 22, 1983. If you have questions concerning this matter, please contact Mr. G.M. Trahey, Assistant Director - Project Quality Assurance.
Very truly yours, b
