Interim Report of 10CFR50.55(e) Item on Fisher Control Valves (#37) i

Dear Mr. Keppler:

i This additional interim report on the Fisher Control Valve problem has been prepared to provide you with the current status of this problem.

This item was originally reported to Mr. R. Knop of NRC Region III by Detroit Edison's Mr. H. A. Walker, Supervisor-Construction Quality Assurance, on Decem-ber 31,1982. At that tine, it had been determined that there was a problem i

with Fisher Control Valves at tle Fermi 2 site.

Control valves were purchased frcm Fisher Controls per Detroit Edison specifi-cations. Later, Detroit Edison Engineering determined that cut-off frequencies had not been adequately specified to assure that seismic design of the valves j

accounted for the Fermi 2 peak response frequency. An investigation by the manufacturer revealed that the original valve actuators did not meet the neces-1 sary seismic requirements.

t New valve actuators have been ordered via revised purchase order and are ex-1 pected to arrive May, 1983. These new actuators, when installed, will nect I

seismic requirenents. The engineering specification for Class 3 valves will be revised for future purchases.

Another report on this item, either interim or final, is scheduled to be sent i

to you on or before Decerrber 17, 1982. If you have questions concerning this matter, please contact Mr. G.M. Trahey, Assistant Director-Project Ouality j

Assurance.

j very truly yours, l
