Subject:

Interim Report of 10CFR50.55(c) Item on Battery Cables DJ61 '"

Dear Mr. Keppler:

On March 12, 1982, Detroit Edison's Mr. J. Doyle Ryan, Quality Assurance i

Engineer, telephoned Mr. John Neisler of NRC-Region III, to report on a problem with Battery Cables at the Fermi 2 site.

During the course of a review of the D.C. system for battery load curve data, it was discovered that smo cables were inadequately sized. The circuits are primarily associated with motor operated valves arxl switch gear, where long lengths of cable were used. Approximately 35 circuits are affected. The repair and/or redesign shall consist of: (1) Replace-ment of the cable with a larger size cable, or (2) Install interposing relays to reduce current through long control circuits. A precise count of affected circuits and a schedule for repair will be available after performance of a battery discharge test to establish the minimum D.C.

system voltage.

Another report on this item, either interim or final, is scheduled to be sent to you on or before August 6,1982. If you have questions concerning this matter, please contact Mr. II.A. Walker, Supervisor-Construction Quality Assurance.

Very truly yours,

,e l
