Dear Mr. Keppler:

Subject:

Interim Report of 10CFR50.55(e) Item on Calibration of Torque Wrenches (#40)

This additional interim report on the Calibration of Torque Wrench problem has been prepared to provide you with the curr.:nt status of this problem.

The problem was originally reported to Mr. J. E. Konklin of NRC Region III by Detroit Edison's Mr. H. A. Walker, Supervisor-Construction Quality Assurance, on March 3, 1981.

Programs of all site contractors performing QA Level I torquing have been reviewed.

Deviation Disposition Requests (DDR's) were issued where hard-ware problems were found. Procedures were revised where needed, and purchase orders changed to provide the required control. DDR's which were written have been dispositioned to provide a 20% sampling of questionable torqued items to verify accuracy.

Calibration frequencies used by the various contractors were reviewed, and in one case, t'ne calibration interval wac shortened. Work is continuing on this problem.

Another report on this item, either interim or final, is scheduled to be sent to you on nr hefore July 23, 1982.

If you have questions con-cerning this matter, please call Mr. H. A. Walker, Supervisor-Construction Quality Assurance.

Very truly yours, n
