3iterim Report of

.55 (e) Item en Thermal Growth Clearance for CRD Penetrati.

.. m n Biological Shield and the Primary Containment (#44)

Dear Mr. Keppler:

This additional interim report on the Thennal Growth Clearance for CRD Penetrations between Biological Shield and the Primary Containment problem has been prepared to sprovide you with the current status of this problem.

This item was originally reported to Mr. J. Konklin of,NRC-Region III by Detroit Edison's Mr. G.J. Carter, QA Engineer - Construction Quality Assur-ance on May 28, 1981.

/

At that tine, it was determined that there was questionabic clearance to allow for thermal growth of the primary containnent vessel with respect to the CRD penetrations in the Biological Shield. Reactor Controls, in canpleting installation of the CRD lines, noted instances where the speci-fled slope of the CRD lines had been exceeded. Detroit Edison Engineering reviewed the design as canpared to the installed conditions to verify and determine the extent of the problem. - The CRD penetrations have been re-noved and are baing replaced with a new design.

, Anotler report on this item, either interim or final, is scheduled to be sent to you on or before June 18, 1982.

If you have questions concerning this matter, please contact Mr. H.A'. Walker, Supervisor-Construction Quality Assurance.
