Docket Nos. 50-522 and 50-523 Gentlemen:

This is Applicants' Second Quarterly Status Report filed pur-suant to the Board's order of August 27, 1980.

Applicants' principal activities in regard t'o the Skagit Pro-ject at Hanford during the current calendar quarter have been the continuation of Applicants' geological and geophysical program on and in the region of the Hanford Reservation. This program has involved substantial field work by Applicants' geology and geo-physical consultants, including drilling, trenching and geological

.2pping, as well as magnetic and gravity mapping and seismic pro-filing. An indication of the scope of the current program is pro-vided by Applicants' expenditures on the program, which in recent months have been as follows:

1980 Excenditures May S 828,000 June 446,000 July. 307,000 August 228,000 September 858,000 October 214,000 g 3 November 301,000 v5 go1231 N U 7g73; C- s3,182,000 IC

U valentine B. Deale, Chairman .

Dr. Frank F. Hooper, Member Gustave A. Linenberger, Member

  • December 24, 1980 Page Two These expenditures are the amounts paid by Applicants to their outside consultants for their work on the program.

The immediate objective of the current geological and geo-physical program is to locatc a suitable site for the Skagit Pro-ject on the Hanford Reservation. The broader objective is to contribute to a better understanding of the tectonics of the region encompassing the Hanford Reservation. To that end, Appli-cants are coordinating their program tith the program currently being conducted by the Washington Public Power Supply System in connection with its nuclear power projects 2 and 1 & 4, which are under construction on the Hanford Reservation.

Although Applicants' program to locate a suitable site for the Skagit Project on the Hanford Reservation has been more time consuming than originally anticipated, Applicants are confident that the program will be successful. Applicants presently esti-mate that they will be in a position to decide upon a specific proposed site for the Skagit Project on the Hanford Reservation by the end of April 1961. In view of the extension of the specific site selection program, it is not presently possible for Applicants to judge with certainty whether they will be able to file the amendments to their Environmental Report and the Preliminary Safety Analysis Report by September 30, 1981, as was scheduled at the time of our letter of September 30, 1980.

During the current quarter Puget Power established a project office in Richland, Washington. One function of this office will be to provide liason between the project and local governmental and community agencies and organizations. Preliminary discussions have been held with the counties, cities ~and other local govern-mental agencies that will be dealing with the community impacts of .

the project.

Very truly yours, P ERKINS , COIE, STONE, OLSEN & WILLIAMS By M N F. Theodore Thomsen Attorneys for Applicants ~
