Control Bank D Step Counter/IRPI deviation greater th~n 12 steps.

CONDITIONS PRIOR TO OCCURRENCE:

Operation Mode* 1 - Reactor Power: 100%.

DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:

At 0900 hours0.0104 days <br />0.25 hours <br />0.00149 weeks <br />3.4245e-4 months <br />, during routine recording of data on Operators Log No. 3, it was noted that Control Bank D Step Counter/IRPI devia-tion was greater than 12 steps. Technical Specification Action Statement 3.1.3.2.a.l was implemented and instrumentation personnel were notified. At 1000 hours0.0116 days <br />0.278 hours <br />0.00165 weeks <br />3.805e-4 months <br />, the IRPI had been recalibrated and Technical Specification Action Statement 3.1.3.2.a.l was terminated.

DESIGNATION OF APPARENT CAUSE OF OCCURRENCE:

The cause of this occurrence was instrument drift caused by the aging of electronic components.

ANALYSIS OF OCCURRENCE:

Technical Specification Action Statement 3.1.3.2.a.l states that with a maximum of one rod position indicator channel per group in-operable, determine the position of the nonindicating rod(s) in-directly by the movable incore detectors at least once per 8 hours9.259259e-5 days <br />0.00222 hours <br />1.322751e-5 weeks <br />3.044e-6 months <br /> and immediately after any motion of the nonindicating rod which ex-ceeds 24 steps in one direction since the last determination of the rod position. The IRPI associated with the rod on Control Bank D was returned to operable status in one hour, therefore, indirect determination of rod position was not required.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

The IRPI channel was recalibrated and the indication returned to within 12 steps of the step counter.
