Quadrant power tilt ratio greater than 1.02 CONDITIONS PRIOR TO OCCURRENCE:

Operational Mode 1 Reactor Power: 51%

DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:

At 1000 hours0.0116 days <br />0.278 hours <br />0.00165 weeks <br />3.805e-4 months <br />, reactor power was decreased from 98% to 51% to allow fQr cleaning of steam generator feed pump strainers. At 1441 hours0.0167 days <br />0.4 hours <br />0.00238 weeks <br />5.483005e-4 months <br />, the quadrant power tilt ratio was determined to be 1.0248 on channel N41 upper. Action Statement a.2 for LCO 3.2.4 was implemented. Action Statement a.2 for LCO 3.2.4 was terminated at 0330 hours0.00382 days <br />0.0917 hours <br />5.456349e-4 weeks <br />1.25565e-4 months <br /> on 2/12/78 when-subsequent hourly calculations beginning at 1730 hours0.02 days <br />0.481 hours <br />0.00286 weeks <br />6.58265e-4 months <br /> on 2/11/78 showed QPT to be less than 1.02.

DESIGNATION OF APPARENT CAUSE OF OCCURRENCE:

The cause of this occurr_ence was the 47% load reduction which resulted in flux oscillations resulting in the quadrant power tilt ratio_ exceeding 1.02.

ANALYSIS OF OCCURRENCE:

Technical Specification 3.2.4 Action Statement a.2 states that with the quadrant power tilt ratio determined to exceed 1.02-but < 1.09: Verify that the quadrant power tilt ratio is within.its limit within 24 hours2.777778e-4 days <br />0.00667 hours <br />3.968254e-5 weeks <br />9.132e-6 months <br /> after exceeding the limit or reduce thermal power to less than 50%of rated thermal power within the next2 hours and_reduce the power range neutron flux-high trip setpoint to < 55% of rated thermal power within the next four hours. -The QPT ratio-was determined to be within its limit within five hours, therefore,_ no further action was required.

Determination of QPT ratio was continued until 0330-hours on 2/12/78.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

This occurrence is considered to be normal following .a large load_ change.
