UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 September 9, 2016 Mr. G.T. Powell Site Vice President STP Nuclear Operating Company P.O. Box 289 Wadsworth, TX 77483

SUBJECT:

REVISION OF SCHEDULE FOR THE CONDUCT OF THE SOUTH TEXAS PROJECT LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION REVIEW (TAC NOS. ME4938, ME4939, ME5122, AND ME5123)

Dear Mr. Powell:

By letter dated October 25, 2010, STP Nuclear Operating Company (STPNOC) submitted an application pursuant to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 54, to renew operating licenses NPF-76 and NPF-80 for the South Texas Project (STP), Units 1 and 2, for review by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). This letter is to inform you about a schedule change in the STP license renewal review.

By letter dated September 27, 2012, the NRC staff revised the STP license renewal review schedule for the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) subcommittee meeting, the final Safety Evaluation Report (SER), and the ACRS full committee meeting to to be determined (TBD), in part, to further assess the selective leaching of aluminum bronze open item. In January 2016, STPNOC informed the NRC during a public meeting that it was significantly revising the aging management program associated with the selective leaching of aluminum bronze.

Based on the information provided by STPNOC since January 2016, the NRC staff will be issuing a second SER with open items and revising the current STP license renewal review schedule from TBD to provide dates for the second SER with open items, the ACRS subcommittee meeting, final SER, the ACRS full committee meeting, and NRC decision on issuing the renewed licenses.

G. T. Powell Enclosed is the revised schedule for the license renewal review of the STP license renewal application.

If you have any questions on the revised schedule, please contact Lois James by telephone at 301-415-3306 or by e-mail at Lois.James@nrc.gov.

Sincerely,

/RA/

Jane E. Marshall, Acting Director Division of License Renewal Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Docket Nos. 50-498 and 50-499
