UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555*0001 March 19, 2012 Mr. D. W. Rencurrel Senior Vice President, Technical Support and Oversight STP Nuclear Operating Company P.O. Box 289 Wadsworth, TX 77483

SUBJECT:

REVISION OF SCHEDULE FOR THE CONDUCT OF ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW OF THE SOUTH TEXAS PROJECT LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION (TAC NOS. ME5122, ME5123, ME4938, AND ME4939)

Dear Mr. Rencurrel:

By letter dated October 25,2010, STP Nuclear Operating Company (the applicant) submitted an application pursuant to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 54 (10 CFR Part 54), to renew operating licenses NPF-76 and NPF-80 for the South Texas Project, Units 1 and 2 (STP) for review by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the Staff).

While reviewing the information contained in the license renewal application and the associated Environmental Report, the staff identified areas where additional information concerning severe accident mitigation alternatives (SAMA) was needed to complete the review (letters dated May 31, 2011, and September 1, 2011). Due to the complexity of the issues, you required additional time beyond the scheduled response date to respond to the requests and submitted your latest responses on February 16, 2012. Due to our receiving the responses later than Initially scheduled, we are updating the review schedule.

Enclosed is a revised schedule for the review of the STP license renewal application. The schedule has been updated to reflect a change in the date for the issuance of the Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement and subsequent environmental milestones. As indicated in the updated schedule, the extension of the environmental review is not expected to adversely impact the schedule for a decision on the STP license renewal.

D. W. Rencurrel -2 If you have any questions on the revised schedule, please contact Tam Tran at 301-415-3617 or bye-mail at tam.tran@nrc.gov.

Sincerely, fLJ-a~Q~~J Melanie A. Galloway, Acting Director Division of License Renewal Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Docket Nos. 50-498 and 50-499
