DETAILS 1.
Discussion:
In a continuing program to assure that accurate radioactivity measurements are being made, a spiked solution was submitted to the WNP-2 radiochemistry laboratory for analysis.
This test solution was prepared and certified by NRC's reference laboratory, the Radiological and Environmental Sciences Laboratory (RESL) of the Department of Energy.
The results are summarized below.
Nuclide H-3 Fe-55 Fe-59 Co-60 Sr-89 Sr-90 Cs-137 WNP-2 uCi/ml 8.59 E-5 1.41 E-5 1.76 E-5 1.86 E-4 2.43 E-5 1.80 E-5 RESL uCi/ml 8.05 E-5 2.81 E-5 7.96 E-6 1.50 E-5 3.39 E-4 3.73 E"5 1.68 E-5 Ratio WNP-2/RESL 1.07 0.50 1.17 0.55 0.65 1.07 Agreement"<

The table above shows that although adequate agreement was achieved for the more abundant gamma emitters (Co-60, Cs-137),
gamma emitting Fe-59 was not detected.
The concentration of Fe-59 was such that it should have been identified.
While the agreement for tritium (H-3) is good, Sr-89, Sr-90 and Fe-55 all fall outside the agreement range.
The relatively low chemical yield obtained for strontium contributed to the discrepancy, After some early difficulties wi'th radio-strontium analysis, it appeared that most of the problems were resolved when good agreement was achieved for a later test sample (Report No. 50-397/83-46).'he current test indicates that consistency has not yet been achieved and that particular attention must be given to improving radio-strontium and radio-iron measurements.
This willrequire stronger involvement of chemistry supervision in this area.
Because of the mixe'd,results obtained for this test, a new test solution has been provided to the WNP-2 laboratory.
(Item No. 85-23-01)
The results of this test: will determine what actions and/or remedies, as needed, will be prescribed to resolve this issue.
With this report Open It:em No. 84-30-01 is closed.
2.
Exit Interview The results of this test were discussed with Radiochemist, L. Ifayne by telephone.
Because of the mixed results obtained for this test, it. was mutually agreed that a new test solution'ould be submitted for analysis by the WNP-2 laborator I iq k

2.0 1.66 1.33 1.25 1.18 Com arison Divide each NRC result by its associated uncertainty to obtain the resolution.
(Note:
For purposes of this p'rocedure, the uncertainty is defined as the relative standard deviation, one sigma, of the NRC result as calculated from counting statistics.)
2.
Divide each licensee result by the corresponding NRC result to obtain the ratio (licensee result/NRC).
3 ~
The licensee's measurement is in agreement, if the value of the ratio falls within 'the limits shown in the preceding table for the corresponding resolutio.
