Dear Tom:
The purpose of this evaluation is to provide a final characterization, primarily a confirmed size for flaw indication noted in Reference 1 above. CONCLUSIONS
- 1. The flaw indication (Ref.1) does not exceed the dimensions of allowable flaw indications of IWB-3514-3. This flaw is less than fifty percent of the maximum allowable flaw size and therefore acceptable for service.
- 2. Flaw characterization provided by Ref. 1 is oversized on the thru-wall dimension by approximately a factor of two (2). ,
- 3. The " Flaw Indication Characterization / Evaluation Report Sheet",
provided in Ref. 1 shculd be superceded by a sheet based on the technique used in Ref. #2.
- 4. The flaw location and orientation repcirted in Ref #1 is confirmed.
The repor:ed flaw . indication length and as stated aboveSensitivity the j thru-wall dimension muso be re-established (3 above). compensation shows the length to be discontinuous or multi- l l faceced. f l DISCUSSION 1 1 The flaw indication reported in Ref. #1 was characterized by a j number of techniques. - a. Straight beam plots from both ID and OD surf aces confirmed the thru-wall location and length.
- b. The dual search unit used in Ref. #2 is focused at the(see flaw a depth location and provides optimized sizing results discussion following).
C. Single element shear wave did not provide meaningful results.
- d. Neither 50' L wave or 50' shear wave (5 MEZ) techniques provided l observable satellite pulses for sizing.
The flaw indication orientation is shown as curved, as with a weld bead interlay, in Ref. #1. This orientation is best re-presented by a side drilled hole (SDH) for demonstrating sizing technique accuracy. The flaw location, shape, and size approxi-mates the 3/16 SDH in calibration block UT-8 used during the I examinations. Figure 1(A) displays theFigure 3/16 SDH.with the observed 1(A) shows an size using the technique in Ref. #1. apparent thru-wall dimension of approximately 0.5 inch (2.7 times the 0.1875 actual). Figure 1(B) which represents the search unit and technique in Ref. #2 shows a measured thru-wall dimension approximating the actual 3/16 SDH size. RECOMMENDATIONS
- 1. That the report by Ref. #1 be supplemented with the characteri-zatica provided by Ref. #2. A new Flaw Indication characterize-tion / Evaluation Sheet be provided which reflects Ref. #2 results.
- 2. That the Flaw indication (Indication #1 Ref. 1) . be accepted for service w th provisions for monitoring for growth in accordance wi h D73-2420 (b) and (c). IWB-2420 requires re-examina:icn for the next 3 ISI periods. If the 3 re-examinations reveal essentially no change in flaw size, this weld examination wculd revert tc the normal schedule of successive inspecticas.
