May 31, 1984 NUCLEAR PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region II 101 Marietta St. , N.W. , Suite 2900 Atlanta, Georgia 30303 Attention: Mr. J. P. O'Reilly, Regional Administrator

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Unit 1 Docket No. 50-416 License No. NPF-13 File: 0260/L-835.0 Special Report 84-012/1 - Update Report - Nonconforming Fire Doors AECM-84/0296 This is an update to a previous report submitted on March 9,1984. The condition for which the report was submitted was discovered on February 1, 1984, when a special fire door inspection was conducted. As a result of the inepection, 147 doors in the Auxiliary Building and Control Building were determined not to be in compliance with the original specification require-ments. The noncenformances consist of door modifications, door-to-frame gaps in excess of specified tolerances, and Underwriter Laboratory labels missing from the doors.

Fire watches were established in the affected areas as required by Technical Specification 3.7.7. The deficiencies are documented on plant Material Nonconformance Reports (MNCRn) 00117-84, 00118-84, and 00119-84.

Overly Manufacturing Comt.any and Richards Wilcox are the manufacturers of special doors; i.e., air, water, pressure tight or bullet resistant. Both suppliers have performed independent inspections and have supplied information identifying the necessary actions required to recertify the doors. l l

The hollow-metal type doors were supplied by Williamsburg Steel Products Company. Since the company is no longer in business, Underwriter Laboratories l will perform an inspection following rework of the doors and report on the condition and acceptability of the fire doors.
