SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Unit 1 Docket No.50-41o License No. NPF-29 Special Report 92-001 GNRO-92/00022 Gentlemen:

On Janaary 28, 1992 at approximately 0425 hours0.00492 days
0.118 hours
7.027116e-4 weeks
1.617125e-4 months
, plant operators started Division 1 diesel generator (DG 11) for performance of the monthly functional surveillance in accordance with Technical Specification 4.8.1.1.2.

DG 11 started successfully and ran unloaded for 45 minutes.

At approximately 0510 hours0.0059 days
0.142 hours
8.43254e-4 weeks
1.94055e-4 months
, DG 11 output breaker 52-1508 would not close.

This malfunction prevented DG 11 from being synchronized and loaded to the grid. DG 11 was manually shut down and secured for maintenance.

Servicing for this invalid failure resulted in replacement of the power converter assembly for the diesel's tachometer system.

Evaluation of the component failure has not determined the cause and will be investigated further.

The tachometer failure would not have prevented DG 11 from providing electrical power during a design emergency condition.

This condition only affected the paralleling capability of the diesel generator and would not have prevented the DG 11 from tying on to the bus in accident conditions.

DG 11 operability was restored on January 28, 1992 at approximately 1717 hours0.0199 days
0.477 hours
0.00284 weeks
6.533185e-4 months
.

This report is being submitted pursuant to requirements contained in GGNS Technical Specification 4.8.1.1.3.

Yours truly, w Y ~~ W WTC/BAB/cg cc:
