Subject:
Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Docket No. 50-416 License No. NPF 29 Special Report 97-002 Valid Failure of Division 2 Emergency Diesel Generator Due to a Jacket Water Leak GNRO-97/00100 Gentlemen:
On September 16,1997, operators performed a routine monthly surveillance run on the Division 2 Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG). Shortly before completion of the surveillance run, a jacket water leak developed at a Dresser Couplingjoint. The leak was estimated to be about half a gallon per minute, lt wasedeterphined that the half gallon per minute leak would prevent the EDG from compisting its design seven day run without operator action. As a result, the Jacket water leak was declared a valid failure of the Division 2 EDG.
The jacket water leak was repaired and the EDG was successfully retested and returned to operable status, in addition, a ifferent design will be installed on the Division 1 and 2 EDGs to address jacket water leaks.
