, Valid Failure of Division i Emergency Diesel Generator Due l to a Jacket Water Leak i

GNRO-97/00082 Gentlemen:

l On July 30,1997, operators were performing a routine monthly surveillance run on i the Division 11 Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG). During the surveillance run,

the EDG tripped on indication of high lube oil temperature. The EDG was taken
out of service to trouble shoot the cause of the trip. The cause of the trip was
determined to be a failed lube oil temperature switch. The high lube oil temperature trip is bypassed in an emergency, therefore, this trip was an invalid
failure of the Division 1 EDG, d

I During the time that the EDG was out of service to replace the faulty lube oil

'_ temperature switch a Jacket water leak developed at a Dresser coupling. It was I - determined that the Jacket water leak was of such a degree that the EDG could not -

have completed its design seven day run without operator action. As a result, the

!- Jacket water leak was declared a valid failure of the Division 1 EDG.-

- The faulty tube oil temperature switch was replaced and the Jacket water leak repaired. The Division i EDG monthly surveillance was run and successfully completed. The valid failure of the Division 1 EDG was the first valid failure in the i- -

last 25 valid tests and the third valid failure in the last 100 valid tests. The EDG 2 was unavailable for 20 hours2.314815e-4 days
0.00556 hours
3.306878e-5 weeks
7.61e-6 months
and 47 minutes. This unavailablity time does not include time associated with routine divisional maintenance.
