U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region II 101 Marietta St., N.W., Suite 2900 Atlanta, Georgia 30303 Attention: Mr. J. P. O'Reilly, Regional Administrator

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Unit 1 Docket No. 50-416 License No. NPF-13 File 0260/L-835.0 Special Report 83-011/1 -

Update Report - Fire Penetrations Do Not Conform to Original Design Criteria AECM-83/0541 This is an update to a previous report submitted on March 25, 1983. The events for which the report was submitted occurred from February 18 to March 3, 1983, when a special inspection of fire rated penetrations identified several penetrations in the Auxiliary, Control, Diesel Generator, and Turbine Buildings which did not conforn to their design specification. The penetrations were declared inoperable and hourly fire watches were established in accordance with Technical Specification 3.7.7.

The condition does not affect the health and safety of the public and does not constitute a threat to plant safety. Nonconformances include sealing material shrinkage and damming boards not being intact. The nonconformances are due to degradation of the penetrations since their original installation.

Material Nonconformance Reports (MNCR) 134-83 and 103-83 were issued te generate the appropriate action. The barriers are expected to be restored by October 15, 1983. This is a Special Report pursuant to Technical Specification 6.9.2.

Yours truly, YY
