Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Unit 1 Docket No. 50-416 License No. NPF-13 File 0260/L-835.0 Special Report 83-066/0 -

Seismic Monitoring Instrumentation Fails Surveillances AECM-83/0468 On July 9, 1983, the triaxial peak recording accelerograph used for seismic monitoring of the Auxiliary Building foundation (Technical Specification 3.3.7.2-1.2.b) failed its surveillance. The instrument was discovered damaged, apparently by recent construction activities.

On July 13, 1983, the triaxial peak recording accelerograph used for scismic monitoring of the reactor vessel support (Technical Specification 3.3.7.2-1.2.f) failed its surveillance. The instrument could not be adjusted into calibration tolerances.

Both instruments have been returned to the manufacturer for rework. New instruments have been ordered and are expected to be delivered prior to August 22, 1983. The instruments should be installed and calibrated prior to August 26, 1983.

This is reported pursuant to Technical Specification 6.9.2 as required by Technical Specification 3.3.7.2.a. The event had no affect on the health and anfety of the public and did not constitute a threat to plant safety.
