Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station l Unit 1 Docket No. 50-416 License No. NPF-13 File 0260/L-835.0 Special Report 83-023/1 -

Update Report - Smoke Detectors Covered During Welding Activities AECM-83/0379 l This is an update to a previous report submitted on April 25, 1983. The event for which the report was submitted occurred on March 12, 1983, when two emoke detectors in the Standby Gas Treatment filter train room (zone 2-19) were covered while welding activities were conducted. Similarly, on March 15, 1983, a smoke detector in the Auxiliary Building (zone 2-8), at elevation 166 feet, was also covered. Fire watches were established in accordance with Technical Specification 3.3.7.9. This was reported as a Special Report pursuant to Technical Specification 6.9.2, since the 14 (fourteen) day LCO time limit was exceeded.

The detectors were covered to prevent actuation due to welding. In our previous report we estimated the detectors would be restored to operability by May 15, 1983. Presently, the work is physically complete but the work package is still in the review cycle. The detectors are now expected to be restored to operability by September 1, 1983.

Yours truly,

<t b~
