SUBJECT:

UNPLANNED RADI0 ACTIVE RELEASE l Following shutdown for unrelated maintenance, on July 15, the Residual Heat Removal System was placed in operation. One Residual Heat Removal heat exchanger was determined to be leaking and releasing radioactive ,

l water to the Tennessee River at a rate above permissible limits. The heat exchanger was taken off line after being in service for approxi-mately two hours. A total of 0.11 curies was released. No significant M i effect to public health or safety is anticipated from this release. The leakage was identified by routine sampling. The licensee has taken environmental samples and further evaluation is in progress. 3 The licensee issued a news release and notified the State of Alabama.

The event was reported by local news media. The NRC does not plan a news release.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by tele-phone from the licensee at 2:25 PM on July 15. This information is current as of 9:00 AM on July 17.
