SUBJECT:
FIRE IN DRYWELL CABLE PENETRATION - SECOND UPDATE THIS PN UPDAYES, PN0 OSP-87-12 AND PN0 CSP-87-12-A ISSUED ON NOVEMBER 2, 1987 AND NOVEMBER 6, 1987, RESPECTIVELY. The cause of a fire which occurred November 2 in electrical wiring in a cable tray adjacent to drywell oenetration "EE" has not yet been determined, and the licensee has taken sf.eps to ensure that equipment and areas affected by the fire are not disturbed until the investigation has been completed.
Preliminary reports from the licensee indicate that the fire was detected by an individual who noticed electrical arcing in the cable tray. Welding and activities associated with c?ectrical modifications were ongoing in the area at the time of the fire.
The licensee also says preliminary reports indicate the following systems were affected by the fire; drywell and floor drain sump pumps, recirculation loop valve operability, nuclear instrumentation (including LPRMs SP.Ms, and IRMs), and drywell blowers and dampers.
iocalized dcmage to three cable trays in the vicinity occurred, and some aluminum conduit in tha area melted due to intense heat. No equipment damage besides the cable is apparent.
The affected area contained permanent and temporary 480, 250, and 120-volt power cables.
The special corporate investigation team established by the licensee continues to investigate the cause of the fire. Four of the sixteen samples taken from fire debris and analjud for accelerants showed traces of gasoline, thereby raising the possibility of arson.
The licensee has requested essis.ance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms for investigation of the fire and an investigator is on site. The FBI has also been notified.
Tiie licensee is continuing to investigate other possible causes of the fire.
l The NRC he5 dispatched a special onsite inspection team to review the event, and the l
