FIRE IN DRYWELL CABLE PENETRATION - UPDATE THIS PN UPDATES, PN0 0$P-87-12. ISSUEi. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1987.

The cause of a fire which occurred November 2 in electrical wiring in a cable tray adjacint to drywell penetration "EE" has not been determined, and the licensee has taken stept to ensure that equipment and areas affected by the fire are not disturbed until the inv;stigation has been completed.

Preliainary reports from the licansee indicate that the fire was detected by an individual '

who n:;ticed electrical arcing in the cable tray. Welding and activities associated with t:1cctrical modifications were ongoing in the area at the time of the fire.

The nsee also says preliminary reports ir.dicate t!ie following systems were affected by ire: drywell and floor drain sump pumps, recirculation loop valve oper bility, nuc instrumentation (including LPRMs, SRMs, and IRMs), and drywell blowers and dampers.

Ltcaliz;d damage to three cable trays in the vicinity occurred, and some aluminum conduit in the area was deformed due to intense heat. No equipment damage besides the cable is apparent. The affected electrical penetration contained permanent and te prary 480 and 120 talt cables.

The NRC has dispatched a special onsite inspection team to review the event, and the licensee has taken steps to ensure that equipment and areas affected by the fire are not disturbed until the cause for the fire has been fully investigated. .
