The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

PLANT SHUTOOWN DUE TO LOW RECIRCULATION LOOP FLOW l

At approximately 9:00 p.m. on September 13, recirculation flow in "A" '

loop dropped from about 41,000 gpm to 33,000 gpm while operating at nne r Fn11owing evaluation of the event, the plant was shut down at '

! (12:41 a.m.) on September 14. The licensee made a preliminary determination i

~t hat the recirculation pump discharge valve disc had separated from the stem permitting the valve to partially close. The licensee is discussing ,

the problem with the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation to determine the Win possibility of operation with one recirculation pump. Both pumps are required by the Technical Specifications. <

.=a s~ Media interest'is expected. The licensee is considering a news release l since the unit may be shut down for one to two weeks. NRC is considering a press release. An IE inspector is onsite. The State of Alabama has been notified.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the plant superintendent at 11:45 a.m. on September 14. This information is current as of 10:00 a.m. on September 15. ,
