SUBJf:CT: SECURITY THREAT j9 '

to At approximately 11:00 a.m. on March 13 the wife of a Browns Ferry plak, esistoyee attecptad to enter the protectied area with a loaded .38 caliber pist.ol atid a knife -

'in her purse. Both the knife and the pistol were discovered during routine search procedures. The subject employee was recently' suspended and has reportedly attended a.bospital due to mental stress. He is one of cight TVA employees addressed in PNO-II-80-38, regarding unexplained reactor trips , dat.ed March 7,1980.

The licensee notified the Limestone County Sherifi's Department which cerponded

., to the site and confiscated the pistol. No charges were filed. A Region II L. security inspector was onsite at the time of the occurrence inspceting access

. - control measures and will review this event.

• The licensee is considering issuing a press release. A press release is~ not planned by'the NRC. The State of Alabama has been notified. Media interest is expected.

The IAT was notified. -4 Region II (At.lanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from a security inspector onsite at 1:20 p.m. on March 13. .
