SUBJECT:

FIRE IN DRYWELL CABLE PENETRLTION The licensee reports that a fire occurredThe today firein electrical detectedwiring to the dry (well EST). blowers was at _10:47 a.m. An at drywell penetration EE" in Unit 2. ',

U;. usual Event was declared at 11:05 a.m. and the fire was extinguished at 11:59 a.m. (EST).

The Unusual Event was terminated at 12:35 p.m. (EST). CO2 and water were used to extinguish

,the fire.

The plant fire brigade responded and extinguished the fire. No outside assistance was required. There were no personnel injuries; however, one auxiliary ur.it operator became nauseated. He was cleared by medical authorities and then returned to work.

EO.inary reoorts from the licensee indicate that drywell blower and damper cables were

$d. The affected electrical penetration contained permanent and temporary 480 and 120 d(

vonicables. A considerable amount of smoke was generated from the cable insulation fire.

The licensee says there was no effect upon plant safety systems or upon control room instrumentation. The licensee is continuing to investigate the cause of the fire and to look for any possible additional damage.

The licensee has responded to area. media inquiries; A press release is being considered by

  • the-licensee. The NRC is prepared to respond to medfa inquiries.

The NRC received initial notification of this event by telephone from the licensee to the Headquarters incident Response Center today at 11:42 a.m. (EST).
