l MONTHLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR FEBRUARY 1985 i

" Review of the Probabilistic Risk Assessment for the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant" (FIN A-3778)

BNL Principal Investigators: M. Khatib-Rahbar (FTS 666-2626)

W. T. Pratt (FTS 666-2630)

NRC Project Manager: W. Lyon (FTS 492-9405), RS Branch

1. Scope /

Purpose:

This project is to provide technical support to the Reactor Systems Branch in reviewing the accuracy and completeness of the Seabrook Proba-bilistic Safety Study (SPSS). BNL wil' perform a critical review of ';he plant design and PRA methods supplemented by audit calculations of selec-ted accident sequences to confirm the validity of the methods and results.

2. Work Performed During Period:

Containment response classes were defined in accordance with common char-acteristics between the plant damage states. Response class frequencies were also calculated based upon the applicant's values for determination of the various source term frequencies for both internal 6nd external events. Accident source term characteristics were also adjusted and re-fined for use by the NRC staff in their site consequence analysis. A re-port describing these source term characteristics was submitted to the NRC Project Manager.

3. Problems /Dela,vs :

None.

4. Summary of Progress to Date/ Milestones:

5. Next Reporting Period:

The results of the NRC site consequence analysis are expected to be com-pleted and sent to BNL to estimate severe accident risk.

A number of questions related to the frequency of the plant damage states for Seabrook need to be resolved through consultation with RRAB, RSB, and LLNL.
