Dear Dave:

This is the twenty-ninth progress report under the referenced con-tract.

This report covers activities performed between February 4, 1989 and March 3, 1989.

Tasks 003, 008, 011, 012, 013, and 014 were active during i

this period.

The technical and management status of the active tasks are discussed below.

Technical Status 1

Task 003: Safety Review of NUPAC Topical Report

]

l SAIC attended a meeting on February 9 to discuss the topical report and the overall status of the review.

Because NUPAC is considering withdrawing the Topical Report, SAIC was asked to not perform additional review work until notified differently.

I Task 008:

Evaluation of West Valley SAR Modules.

Activities this period included initiation of review of revision 4 of the STS SAR and continuing review of revision 0 of the Vitrification.SAR.

STS review activities included formulation and evaluation of possible failure modes for the air sparge system to be added to the STS ion exchange l

columns.

Vitrification system review activities included generation of

)

questions and comments on the draft SAR.

Results of both of these activities are expected to be submitted to NRC in the following period.

Task 011:

Environmental Assessment for B&W Apollo License Renewal A phone conserv& tion was held between NRC, SAIC and B&W personnel to discuss areas where additional information is required to complete the EA.

Task 012:- Safety Review of NUTECH. Topical Report SAIC submitted a draft SER on February 28,:1989. 'The: draft was essentially complete except for the sections addressing criticality.

These sections are being prepared based on the new information supplied by the applicant.

The draft SER in undergoing' internal peer review..

Task 013:

Preparation-of.the SER and EA for the Oconee ISFSI All sections for the SER for the Duke Power _ Company license-application are currently being written. We plan to submit a -draft SER by the_ end of.

March.

1 Task 014:

Evaluation of HIC Topical Reports 1

No additional work was completed this period.

Manaaement SliLtM l

l Proposals were submitted for additional work on task 11 and for two new tasks.

The two new tasks were the evaluation of Safety Analysis and related submittals for the West Valley Demonstration Project (Task 16) and Safety Review of a Proposed Amendment to the H.B. Robinson Unit #2 ISFSI (Task 17).

The period of performance has been extended for Tasks 8,11, and 14.
