Dear Mr. Lyon:

Enclosed is the January monthly report for the activities sponsored by your Branch. Also included are the computtrized budget summaries and the fee recovery cost status for each program. I would suggest that you and your staff review the reports to determine whether there are any discrepr.ncies.

If there are, please notify the principal investigator.

We hope this meets with your approval. If there are any questions re-garding format, distribution, or budget reporting, please contact Mr. A. J.

Weiss, Administrative Technical Assistant, FTS 666-4473.

t MONTHLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR JANUARY 1985

" Review of the Probabilistic Risk Assessment for the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant" (FINA-3778)

BNL Principal Investigators: M. Khatib-Rahbar (FTS 666-2626)

W. T. Pratt (FTS 666-2630)

NRC Project Manager: W. Lyon (FTS 492-9405), RS Branch-

1. Scope /

Purpose:

This project is to provide technical support to the Reactor Systems Branch in reviewing the accuracy and completeness of the Seabrook Proba-bilistic Safety Study (SPSS). BNL will perform a critical review of the plant design and PRA methods supplemented by audit calculations of selec-ted accident sequences to confirm the validity of the methods and results.

t

2. Work Performed During Period:

The preliminary report was completed and submitted to the NRC Project Manager. Included in the report are assessments of the containment fail-ure modes, radiological source terms, and release characteristics.

A review of tne containment leakage behavior and subsequent impact on ra-diological release category characteristics seems to indicate that the leak-before-gross failure hypothesis does not influence the risk dominant containment failure mode, namely the late overpressure failure mode.

! Therefore, it appears that the leak-before-gross failure approach does little to change the potential for the late overpressurization mode of-containment.

3. Problems / Delays:

The transmittal date for the preliminary report (refer to Item 2) was de-layed because of higher priority given by the NRC to FIN A-3805.

4. Summary of Progress to Date/ Milestones:

- See Item 2.

5. Next Reporting Period:

The interrelationship of the containment leakage model and accident re-lease categories will be further evaluated. The NRC Project Manager's comments will be factored into the preliminary report and radiological scurce terms will be selected.
