?

Dear Sirs:

=_

-e It was reported by the Miami Herald and the L.A. Times J

, on 16 March 1976, that nuclear generator storage pits at the Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant, 25 miles south of Miami, Florida, has been j and is leaking nuclear wastes into Biscayne Bay, at the rate of 90 l i gallons per hour, for the last 2 years. These wastes contain radio-b=

active elements that remain highly radioactive for about 500,000 years. Acon 6 these elements is plutouim 239, which according to many (

2 3

t scientists is the most toxic element in the world.  ; }

w '

According to A.D. Schmidt, vice president of power

~

resources for Florida Power and Light, the leaks can not be stopped f Y because the pits are too radioactive for humans to work in. But he >

3

said that the wastes leaving those pits are "not dangerous" . Officals  ;

for the Florida Power and light say that the Atomic Regulator Commission have known about the leaks for 2 years. l f l

Even though the officals of Florida Power and Light say _

that the wastes are not dangerous there is no way that these wastes are a

! =

not aff'ecting the local egosphere, and the world environment. Lets give ,

Florida Power and Light the be'nifit of the doubt and say that those g

wastes pooring out of those pits are'not dangerous to humans and animals g in the area. But what is safe for man is safe for micro-organisns,such J as plankton. Plankton and other micro-or6anisms are food for small fish '

N and carine anic:als, they also produce 80% of this planets oxygen. Radiation [ ,

from these wastes will damage these organism either by poisioning, _

l mutation of offspring,or total destruction of the organism, As soon as fish start eating these radioactive plankton theywwill become victums  ;

of radiation poisioning and infect whatever eats them, inclueding man!  !

Radioac'tive elements will kill anything that injests or inhails thca. _

While thin is taking places the amount of oxygen will be affected by g radioactive damaged micro-organisms. j j

i . .

These nondangerous wastes have been pooring into Bis-

' , cr'ync Bay, at the rate of 90 gallons per hour,and up the Altantic coast

,via the Gulf Stream. Someday the Gulf Stream will have carried these racioactive wastes and the effected organisms to Europe and threating Vestern Civilization and the entired world with mutations and death.

B ut Florida Power ar.d Light, and the Atomic Regulatory Commission are planning to triple the out put of Turkey Piont. This will triple the amount of radioactive wastes thich they can not safely handle now.

I therefore recommend that a public investigation be made on t'he Turkey Piont Nuclear Power Plant leaks and the closing of the plant until a safeway of disposing of the waste is determined and put into operation . The investigation should find out what caused the leaks ,what can be done to cure the problem, how to prevent simular problems , what damage was done to the environment, how to stop the spread of the radioactive wastes and organisms ,and if sic:ular things are happening at other atomic falities.
