NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION 611 Ryan Plaza Drive - Suite 400 Arlington TX 76011-8064 No. IV-00-23 June 7, 2000 CONTACT: Breck Henderson Phone: 817-860-8128 Cellular: 817-917-1227 e-mail: bwh@nrc.gov NRC TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS RANCHO SECO DECOMMISSIONING The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet with the public on Tuesday, June 20, to discuss recently changed plans for the dismantlement and decontamination of Rancho Seco, a shutdown nuclear power plant owned by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the Chabolla Community Center, 630 Chabolla Ave., Galt, California. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The NRC and SMUD will make short presentations on dismantlement plans and how the NRC will inspect and regulate the work, followed by an opportunity for members of the public to make comments and ask questions.

On November 4 last year SMUD provided a second amendment to its original decommissioning plans in which the company has elected to forego its initial plan to maintain the plant in a long-term safe storage condition and begin full decontamination and dismantlement. The work is now scheduled to be completed by 2008. Because this is a significant change in the original plans the NRC is holding this meeting to explain the changes to the public.
