3. Occurrence Date: February 23-24,1978 (determined at planc 15 March '1978)
4. Identification of Occurrence:

Biomass of fish and shellfish impinged on the intake screens

of Units 1, 2 and 3 exceeded the 50 kg/24 hr. reporting level of Section 3.1.3 of the Environmental Technical Specifications.

5. Conditions prior to Occurrence:

Unit #1 - All water ci.rculation pumps operational.

Unit #2 - All water circulation pumps operational.

Unit #3 - All water circulation pumps operational. '

6. Description of Occurrence:

During the period 0900 February 23,1978 to 0900 February 24, 1978.

185.96 kg of fish and shellfish were impinged on the intake screens -

of Crystal River Units 1, 2 and 3. Of the 185.96 kg impinged, Unit 3 accounted for .123.49 kg (66% of total). Four finfish species accounted for 142.13 kg (76% of total); pinfish 28%, Atlantic sting-ray '27%, bay anchovy 12%, silver perch 9%. Two commercially utilized shellfish species, the pink ' shrimp and blue crab accounted for 11.08 kg (6% of total). The remaining biomass impinged was distributed among several species of fish and shellfish.

7. Designation of Aoparent Cause of Occurrence:

The following unusual or periodic events were noted prior to or during the occurrence:

Two coal barges exited the intake canal during sampling.

One additional coal barge entered the intake canal during sampling.

These events may have been partially responsible for the impingement observed.
