This report summarizes the operation of the ARRR during the seventeenth year of operation. This information is submitted in compliance with the requirements of 10 CFR, Part 50.59, " Authorization of Changes, Tests and Experd unts."
Included is a monthly operational summary and a summary of unscheduled power reductions.
Two hundred and seventy-six megawatt hours of ARRR operation were accumulated during the seventeenth year of operation and 102 service irradiations were performed. A total of 31 unscheduled power reductions occurred during the year. The largest single cause of these reductions was spurious fast period trips on Channel 2. Extensive effort was expended to correct this problem with a final solution involving replacement of the 10 turn calibration potentio-meters. No further scrams of this nature have occurred since this replacement.

Annual Summary of Changes, Tests, and Experiments at Acrotest Radiography and Research Reactor (ARRR).

Docket No. 50-228, for period ending 6-30-82

Dear Mr. Sternberg:

The number of unscheduled power reductions has been reduced by more than a factor of two over last year.

The shield block configuration around the reactor was changed to reduce i

radiation exposure and steel restraints were added to provide earthquake i protection. An uninterruptible power supply was purchased and installed but dges not perform reliably on a continuous basis. Discussions with the manu-facturer continue in an effort to resolve the problem.

Operation of the reactor continues to be safe and efficient without major changes or problems.

. Very truly yours, QN AER0 TEST OPERATIONS, INC.
