Docket No. 50-228, Letter dated 13 Nov. 1979 from H.E. Book to Richard Newacheck

Dear Mr. Book:

The " Notice of Violation" included as Appendix A of the referenced letter states that our evaluations of neutron exposures to non-neutron radiographers have not been adequate. In compliance with 2CFR2.201, we submit this reply including:

1) Corrective steps which have been taken by Aerotest Operations, Inc.
2) Corrective steps which will be taken to avoid further violations
3) The date when full compliance will be achieved.

During our evaluation of neutron doses the past year, we did not specifically evaluate and document the neutron / gamma dose ratios at the reactor console and Quality Assurance Laboratory, two relatively low radiation areas. However, based on our personnel dosimetry reports, we did establish that the combiacd personnel doses in these areas were approximately one-half the dose received by the neutron radiographers.

We are currently evaluating the neutron doses for personnel normally occupying these work stations based on time studies and additional surveys with neutron and gamma survey meters. This evaluation will be completed by 15 January 1980, at which time Aerotest Operations will be in full compliance with the require-ments of 10CFR 20.101 and 10CFR 20.201(b). To preclude any future omissions of this nature, the Radiological Safety Of ficer will evaluate the neutron /

gamma doses at each and every new work station as these stations are established by revision or expansion.

Docket 50-228 3 December 1979 We believe these actions, when completed in January 1980, are the correct and necessary ones to remedy the infraction stated in Appendix A. Aerotest has always stressed the importance of minimizing personnel exposure, even before the concept of ALARA was proposed in Regulatory Guide 8.10 and will continue to maintain our high concern in this area.

Very truly yours.
