_ _._ g 6/12[96 I Executive Director for Operations U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555 Re: Docket No. 50-228

Dear Sir:

In our letter dated 8 Aug.1994 we stated that as part of our program to meet the requirements of 10CFR 20.1301 - Radiation Dose Limits for Individual Members of the Public, we would perform periodic surveillance at approximately one hour intervals of our fence area whenever our reactor was operational.

i in the 2-year period since we instituted this surveillance we have rarely observed anyone come close to our fenceline. During our recent NRC inspection in April, Blaine Murray (Region IV Chief of Reactor Inspection Branch) characterized our hourly surveillance as "probably overkill" In view of the above observations and to reduce the burden on our employees we have decided, with the approval of our Reactor Safeguards Committee, to reduce the fence area surveillance to wice in the morning and twice in the afternoon with the reactor shutdown during lunch.

l This action will take effect on 1 July 1996. Ifyou have any questions or comments on this matter please call us at your convenience.

Sincerely, 9607100041 960612 PDR ADOCK 05000228 P
