Subject:
Annual Summary of Changes, Tests and Experima at Aerotest Radiography and Research Reactor 0-(ARRR) Docket No.'50-228, for period during e
+
Dear Mr. Scarano:
The enclosed report summarizes the ARRR operations from July 1, 1989.
through June 30, 1990. ' This submittal complies with the requirements. set forth in,10 CFR, part 50.59, " Authorization of Changes, Tests and Experiments."
' Summary forms of monthly operations and unscheduled power reductions.are included.'
. As shown'in the Summr y Table of unscheduled sautdowns, the former problem:
of high pcol water temperature scrams appears-to have been brought under control.
LThere continues to be occasional spurious-scrams due to electronics problems.
~
The rt ot cause of -these is primarily related to the fact that all'of the elec-tronics are aged non-solid state units.
There were two occasions when the installed Earthquake Scram Circuit functioned from earth movement. On Oct. 17,.1989 the reactor had been shutdown normally just before the earthquake, but the.carthquake sensor had to be reset before the next reactor reatsart. On April 6, 1990 the reactor was scrammed-from' power by a local sharp earthquake.
After both earthquakes a thorough in-spection and nuclear function-tests indicated that no damage to the reactor' had been sustained.
'No unusual problems have been noted during the year and the reactor has been operating in a safe and reliable manner.
Very truly yours.,
AER0 TEST OPERATIONS. I..
