Re: Reply to a Notice of Violation

Dear Sir:

The Notice of Violation has been received and reviewed. Although several of our personnel have been trained fonnally in shipment of dangerous goods, the segment on the shipment of radioactive materials is minimal, at best, in these general courses. Consequently, our corporate knowledge on the current regulations does not seem to be adequate. To rectify the problem, we have instituted the following remedial actions:

1. Reviewed the applicable portions of 10CFR and 49CFR pertaining to the shipment of dangerous goods. I
2. Registered the cognizant personnel in seminars on the shipment of radioactive materials. l
3. Resiew and update the " Standard Operating Procedures For Transportation of Hazardous Materials".

These items will bc completed by the end of February,1999, i I

We wish to thank the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the inspector, Mr. Craig Bassett, for  :

finding the discrepancies noted in the Notice of Violation. While we pride ourselves in being I knowledgable about both 10 CFR and 49 CFR and subscribe to services which update both regulations, we might have continued our current practice, especially the omission of the SI units on the shipping i documents, if Mr. Bassett had not informed us of the requirement. I The remedial actions we are taking should ensure immediate compliance with the cureent l requirements of 10 CFR and 49 CFR and the formal training will be additional insurance that our personnel will be current in their shipping practices, Very Truly yours,

/
